I. THE SHOP ON THE CORNER 1881

In 1881 a twenty-one-year-old named Kintarō Hattori opened a 小さい 店 in 東京 selling and repairing imported 時計. He had no 工場, no capital worth mentioning, and no particular advantage over anyone else. What he had was a habit that turned out to be worth more than all three: he paid his suppliers 早い — early.

In an industry where everybody paid 遅い, Hattori paid 早い — and so, when stock was short, he got it 一番, first. The whole 会社 grows out of that one 小さい decision.

Eleven years later he built a 工場 and called it 精工舎. Wall clocks first, then 懐中時計, then in 一九一三 something nobody in Japan had managed before: a domestically made 腕時計. He named it the Laurel.

The name is a promise 精 means refined or exact. 工 means craft or manufacture. 舎 is a house or hall. Seikosha — "the house of exact craftsmanship." He chose the 名前 before he had earned it, and spent forty years catching up to it.

II. THE EARTHQUAKE 1923

On the first of 九月 1923 the Great Kantō 地震 destroyed the Seikosha 工場. Along with the machinery went every customer 時計 that had been left in for 修理.

Hattori's response is the reason 人 in 日本 still tell this 話. He had no legal obligation and no insurance worth the 名前. He replaced 全部 — every single customer's 時計, with a 新しい one — at his own cost.

It nearly finished him. It also meant that when the 工場 reopened, the queue outside it was very 長い.

The word you will see on old dials From 一九二四, the rebuilt company began printing a new name on its dials: セイコー. Every 時計 in your collection carries the word that came out of that 火.

III. TWO FACTORIES, ONE RIVALRY 1950s

After the 戦争, Seiko did something strange. Instead of consolidating, it split 時計 production between 二つ separate 工場 — Suwa Seikosha in the 山 of Nagano, and Daini Seikosha in 東京 — and then deliberately set them competing against each other.

They developed rival 機械. They were both allowed to make Grand Seiko. They were given the 同じ briefs and judged against each other, and neither was told to cooperate. It was wasteful, duplicated effort, and it produced the best decade of watchmaking either of them ever had.

You can tell which 工場 made a vintage Seiko by a 小さい mark on the 文字盤: a 泉 spring symbol for Suwa, a lightning bolt for Daini.

IV. THE MARVEL 1956

Everything Seiko had built until 1956 had followed a Swiss template somewhere underneath. In 六月 of that year Suwa released the Marvel — the 最初 Seiko 腕時計 designed 完全 in-house, owing nothing to anyone.

It is a plain 時計. 十七石, 手巻き, centre 秒針, no 日付, no shock-resistance claims on the 文字盤. Nothing about it announces itself. But its 26.0mm 機械 was accurate, robust, and — crucially — 日本's own.

Every Seiko that matters descends from it: Marvel → Gyro Marvel → Crown → Grand Seiko. The 1960 Grand Seiko, the 時計 built to beat Switzerland, is this 機械's grandchild.

EXHIBIT A SEIKO MARVEL · ref. 14020 · S-mark SUWA · 17 JEWELS · HAND-WIND · ¥4,400 · 鑑定付き

Bought from a Yahoo オークション with an authentication badge, which is why it was not cheaper. The 竜頭 and 巻真 are missing — somebody tried to open it, made a mess of the ケース, and gave up. The 文字盤 is original, not a リダン, and the black specks on it are loose 汚れ rather than damage.

This is the oldest and most historically significant object in the collection. It does not get flipped.

V. THE MAGIC LEVER 1959

三年 later, Suwa turned the Marvel into an automatic and solved a 問題 the Swiss had been throwing お金 at for decades: how to wind a 主ゼンマイ from a ローター that turns both ways, and do it 安い.

The answer was the Magic Lever — マジックレバー. 二つ small pawls on a single spring arm, one pushing and one pulling, so that rotation in either direction winds. It has almost no 部品, it is almost impossible to 壊す, and it costs almost nothing to 作る.

It is still in Seiko automatics 今. It is 中 nearly every 自動巻き 時計 you own. When you 分解 your first 6119, you will be looking at a 1959 idea that was simply too good to replace.

EXHIBIT B SEIKO LAUREL · ref. 14036 HAND-WIND · EGP 20 MICRON FRONT · ¥3,600 · 動作未確認

The Laurel 名前 comes back from 1913 for a quiet mid-range line. This one was sold as 動作未確認 — the cheapest and riskiest listing category — and it runs, slightly 速い. There is a hairline crack in the beautiful domed 風防, and the 竜頭 is the wrong 色, replaced at some point by someone who did not care.

The ケース front is 金メッキ twenty microns thick over base metal. Never 研磨 it.

VI. THE SEIKO FIVE 1963

In 1963 Seiko released the Sportsmatic 5, and the number was a specification, not a 名前. 五つ promises, printed on a 時計 a working 人 could afford:

One — 自動巻き, automatic winding. Two — 曜日 and 日付 on the same 文字盤, which almost nobody offered at this 値段. Three — 防水, water resistance. Four — a recessed 竜頭 at 四時, protected by the ケース. Five — a ケース and ベルト built to survive being worn 毎日 for years.

It became the most-produced 機械式 時計 family in 世界 history. Seiko never really stopped making it.

EXHIBIT C SEIKO SPORTSMATIC 5 · ref. 6619-9010 SERIAL 6405151 · MID-1960s · ¥840

A first-generation Seiko 5. The direct ancestor. It cost eight hundred and forty yen — less than a bowl of ramen.

The 風防 looks as though it was dragged along a road, and the 文字盤 has 水 bleeding inward from the edges at seven and at twelve. Those two facts are one fact: the damaged 風防 is where the 水 got in. There is a whale engraved on the 裏蓋.

VII. TOKYO, 1964

The 1964 東京 Olympics were the 最初 Games timed by a 会社 that was not Swiss. Seiko got the 仕事 partly because it was the host 国's firm, and had roughly 二年 to build equipment it had never built before.

They produced 1,278 timing devices. They built the 最初 printing timer, which recorded results automatically instead of relying on a 人 with a clipboard. They built a portable クオーツ chronometer — the Crystal Chronometer QC-951 — that had to be carried along the marathon route in a van.

That crash programme is the hidden cause of everything that followed. The クオーツ 時計 the marathon van carried in 1964 is the direct ancestor of the 時計 that detonated the industry 五年 later.

The detail people forget Swiss timekeeping firms had held the Olympic contract since 1932. After 1964, they never held it uncontested again. Seiko had not merely built the equipment — it had built 世界-class equipment, in public, on a deadline, in front of みんな.

VIII. THE EXPORT YEARS 1968

By the late sixties Seiko was selling to the 世界, and the 時計 show it. The 61xx generation arrives with quickset 日付, higher 石 counts, and something you can still 読む on your own 文字盤: a 曜日 wheel printed in 二つ languages, so that the same 時計 could be 売る in 東京 or in Toronto.

EXHIBIT D SEIKO 5 DX · ref. 6106-8130 SERIAL 8D2142 → DECEMBER 1968 · CAL. 6106A · 25 JEWELS · ¥4,100

Bilingual 曜日 wheel: English one 日, 漢字 the next. Scratched inside the 裏蓋 are two service marks in 昭和 dating — 57.8 and 58.3. 八月 1982 and 三月 1983.

Someone owned this watch and looked after it properly. Then, forty-three years ago, they stopped. You are the next person to open it.

EXHIBIT E SEIKO 5 · ref. 6119-7130 EARLY-MID 1970s · CAL. 6119 · 21 JEWELS · ¥1,000

This one travelled. The service marks inside are not in Japanese format at all — they are in Latin script: 22-9-90, MAY 22, 27/93. This watch was sold abroad, worn somewhere hot and humid, serviced by watchmakers who wrote in dates rather than Shōwa years, and eventually shipped back to Japan in a bulk lot to be sold as junk.

The 錆 is entirely on the 文字盤 and 針. The 機械 underneath is きれい, and it still runs.

IX. CHRISTMAS DAY, 1969

On 25 十二月 1969, Seiko released the Astron — the 世界's 最初 クオーツ 腕時計. 百 were 作る. Each cost 450,000 円, roughly the 値段 of a Toyota 車.

It kept time to within five 秒 a 月. The best 機械式 時計 on earth, made by the best Swiss houses, managed five 秒 a 日.

And then Seiko did the thing that is genuinely hard to believe. They did not lock the technology down. The core quartz patents were opened to the industry.

What followed is called the Quartz Crisis. Swiss watchmaking 仕事 fell by roughly two thirds inside fifteen years. Hundreds of 会社 closed. The industry that had dominated timekeeping for two centuries very nearly ceased to exist — and the thing that did it was given away.

The cost to Seiko It also killed Seiko's own mechanical business. Grand Seiko mechanical production stopped in the mid-1970s and did not resume until 1998. An entire generation of hand skills went quiet inside the company that had spent ninety years building them.

Every 機械式 watch in your collection was made by a company in the process of abandoning mechanical watches. That is why they are so good, and why they were so cheap for so long.

X. THE FLOOD 1970s

The strangest thing about the 1970s is that while Seiko was busy destroying the 機械式 時計, it was simultaneously making them better and 安い than anyone ever had. Volumes peaked. Quality was extraordinary. 値段 collapsed.

誰も noticed at the time, because everybody wanted クオーツ.

EXHIBIT F SEIKO 5 ACTUS · ref. 7019-7060 CAL. 7019 · 21 JEWELS · c.1973–74 · ¥2,400

Faceted lugs, sharp as the 日 they were cut — the defining look of the decade. It starts the instant you pick it up, which tells you the winding train is 大丈夫.

The 日付 quickset is seized solid. That is almost certainly sixty years of hardened 油 in the date corrector, not a broken 部品. Do not force it.

EXHIBIT G SEIKO · CAL. 7006A · gold-plated 21 JEWELS · 1970s · NON-RUNNER · CASE BACK MISSING

Cost-engineering, stated openly: the 7006A has no 手巻き at all, and the 曜日 does not quickset. At this 値段, the ローター was judged to be enough.

The 裏蓋 is gone entirely, so the 機械 has been breathing coastal 千葉 air for an unknown number of years. That alone may be why it stopped. The 文字盤, ironically, is the 一番 cleanest of any Seiko here.

EXHIBIT H SEIKO QUARTZ · CAL. 7N01 1980s–90s · MINERAL CRYSTAL · ¥1,500

The end of the 話, in the collection's cheapest form. The 7Nxx クオーツ 機械 were accurate, reliable, made in enormous numbers, and never intended to be 修理 by anybody.

This one's 文字盤 is destroyed by foxing beyond any saving. The signed ベルト is the only value in it. It has been designated the sacrificial dial for cleaning experiments — the most useful thing it will ever do.

❖ ❖ ❖
Closing Eight Seikos, bought for a total of about eighteen thousand 円 from ジャンク bins and オークション lots. Between them they cover 1956 to the 1990s: the first in-house movement, the first generation of the Seiko 5, the export boom, the peak of the mechanical era, and the quartz that ended it.

None of them is rare. All of them are ordinary 中古 時計 that ordinary 人 wore to ordinary 仕事. That is rather the point. Hattori's whole idea, from the shop on the corner in 1881, was that exact craftsmanship should not be reserved for the wealthy — and the proof of it is that sixty years later you can buy the evidence for ¥840.
