👨‍🏫 Eikaiwa Crossover

👨‍🏫Concepts Your Students Struggle WithTEACHER TOOLS

The English concepts Japanese students find hardest — with Japanese equivalents, teaching strategies, and common mistakes.

THE vs A/AN — Articles

the / a / an
日本語にはない!
No articles in Japanese — #1 hardest concept. "a" = any one thing (indefinite). "the" = specific known thing (definite). Draw it: "a dog" (any) vs "the dog" (that specific one)
✓ I saw a dog. Later I fed the dog.
✗ "I want to eat the sushi" · "I am student"

PRESENT PERFECT vs PAST

have eaten / ate
両方とも「食べました」
Japanese 食べました covers both! "I ate" = specific past event. "I have eaten" = life experience, result matters now. The connection to present is the key difference.
✓ Have you ever eaten natto? · I ate natto yesterday.
✗ "I have ate" · "Did you ever eat natto?"

COUNTABLE vs UNCOUNTABLE

rice / a rice
日本語では「ご飯」は数えられる
In Japanese you count 一膳 of rice. In English "rice" is uncountable — no "rices." Teach: water, sugar, rice, bread = uncountable. Use "some" not "a".
✓ Can I have some rice? · Two bowls of rice.
✗ "I want a rice" · "Two rices please"

MAKE vs DO

make / do
両方とも「する」or「作る」
Both map to する or 作る. Rule: MAKE = create/produce. DO = perform activity. But many phrases are fixed — make a mistake, do homework. Learn them as set phrases!
✓ Make a cake · Make a mistake · Do homework
✗ "Do a cake" · "Make my homework"

SINCE vs FOR (Time)

since / for
「〜から」vs「〜間」の違い
SINCE = starting point (specific time) = から. FOR = duration = 間. Draw a timeline! "Since 2020" vs "for 3 years"
✓ I've lived here for 5 years. · Since 2019.
✗ "Since 5 years" · "For 2019"

IN / ON / AT — Prepositions

in / on / at
全部「に」or「で」になる
AT = specific point (at school, at 3pm). IN = inside/enclosed (in Tokyo, in March). ON = surface/day (on the table, on Monday). Japanese に and で cover all three!
✓ At school · In Tokyo · On Monday
✗ "In Monday" · "On Tokyo" · "At morning"
